Capítulo 1
Rain hammered the city in relentless sheets, turning the glass towers into shimmering mirrors fractured by streaks of water. Grace Bennett pulled her coat tighter around herself, the collar biting cold against her cheek as she moved through the cavernous lobby of Crane Enterprises. The scent of expensive leather furniture mixed with polished stone and something faintly metallic—an invisible signature of ruthless corporate power.
Her heels clicked sharp against the marble floor, echoing in the cavernous space where every face was a mask and every glance a calculation. At the far end, a pair of security guards watched her pass with indifferent eyes. Grace’s throat tightened, words tangled on the edge of her tongue, but she swallowed hard and kept walking.
“Miss Bennett,” a voice cut through the silence without preamble. Smooth, cold, commanding.
She stopped, the muscles in her neck coiling like a trapped animal. She turned slowly to face the man stepping out from the shadows behind the reception desk.
Ethan Crane.
Tall, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit that looked sculpted onto his broad frame, he regarded her with eyes as sharp and unforgiving as a blade. A curl of dry amusement lifted his lip.
“Right on schedule,” he said. “I’m glad you could make it despite the weather.”
Grace squared her shoulders, refusing to betray the storm swirling inside her. “I’m here. Let’s get this over with.”
His gaze flickered, calculating—as if weighing the worth of a commodity. Then he gestured toward the elevator bank.
“Follow me.”
The ride to the penthouse was swallowed in silence, the hum of the machinery the only soundtrack to the suffocating space. Grace’s heartbeat thudded loud in her ears, but she kept her hands steady on her lap, fingers curling against the soft leather of her purse.
When the doors slid open, she stepped out into a room bathed in harsh, cold light. Floor-to-ceiling windows revealed the city sprawled beneath, a labyrinth of power and corruption.
Ethan’s footsteps echoed as he crossed the room to a sleek desk, sliding into the chair behind it without ceremony. He looked up, eyes locking onto hers like a predator sizing prey.
“We’ve danced around this long enough,” he began, voice low, the steel beneath undeniable. “Your father’s debts have become... problematic.”
Grace’s breath caught. She forced her hands to unclench, the bitter taste of panic rising. “I told you I was working on a solution. Things are—”
“Unravelling.” He cut her off sharply. “And now the board is restless. Your family's reputation is more than just gossip in these halls. It’s a liability.”
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. “I don’t expect you to care about my family.”
“No,” he said. “But I care about control. And right now, this situation is spinning beyond both our comfort zones.”
Grace squared her chin, exhaling slowly. “So what? You want to exploit my desperation?”
His smile was sharp, dangerous. “I want to make an arrangement.”
She arched a brow, skeptical. “An arrangement?”
He leaned forward, hands resting on the desk. “A contract marriage.”
The words hit her like a fist.
Her eyes narrowed. “You can’t be serious.”
Ethan’s voice remained steady, relentless. “Think of it as... mutual insurance. You protect your family’s honor, and I consolidate an alliance—for my company’s stability.”
Grace wrenched the sting from her eyes, the fury simmering beneath. “And if I refuse?”
His gaze darkened, the playfulness vanishing like a cracked veneer. “Then your family falls. The debts come due. And believe me, I don’t forgive debts easily.”
She swallowed against the cold burn in her throat. Her mind raced, every corner shadowed with fear.
“Marriage is permanent,” she whispered. “Even if it’s a contract.”
“Not necessarily,” he shrugged. “We negotiate terms. Terms that favor us both.”
Her jaw tightened, the faces of her mother, her little sister flashing behind her lids—fragile, depending on her.
“What do you want from me?” she asked, voice breaking.
Ethan’s eyes glittered with a secret edge. “Everything.” He leaned back as if settling into a long-anticipated victory. “But more important than anything else... there’s a reason this isn’t just another business deal.”
Grace’s breath froze as he reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a slender envelope embossed with the Crane insignia. He slid it across the desk with deliberate slowness.
“You’ll find... personal details in there. Details that tie you—and me—far closer than you ever imagined.”
Her fingers trembled as she reached forward.
“Why are we really tied together, Ethan?” Her voice was a mixture of challenge and dread.
He smiled—one corner curling up, cold as ice.
“Because, Grace,” he said softly, “this isn’t just about money or power. It’s about secrets. Yours and mine. Secrets that, if revealed, could destroy everything.”
The room seemed to shrink, the city’s lights outside blurring into meaningless sparkles.
Grace’s pulse hammered. The contract lay before her—but underneath it, a deeper, darker price she wasn’t ready to pay.
And yet, she knew—there was no turning back.
