Capítulo 1

The Contract Offer

Elara Winters stood in the glass-walled conference room overlooking the city’s steel veins, the pulse of neon and traffic weaving through midnight streets beneath her. A gust of cold air swept in when the opened door snapped shut behind her, pulling her tangled auburn hair over one shoulder. Her gaze slid over the skyline, all jagged spires and shimmering windows—a kingdom she was meant to inherit, now slipping through trembling fingers.

The board of Winters & Co. sat around the polished mahogany table, their faces fixed in pinched uncertainty. The latest financial report, projected on the screen, glared back at her like a guilty verdict: debt climbing, assets eroding, creditors circling like wolves scenting blood.

She shoved the mounting panic down like a bitter pill. Years of sacrifice, bloodied nights, whispered deals to prop up a crumbling legacy—the family fortune was a fading flame. Her father’s old empire risked crumbling into ash, and every second ticked closer to oblivion.

“Elara,” a voice cut through the tense silence, crisp and cold as winter glass.

All eyes turned to Kian Drake.

He didn’t bother with the usual silk-pocketed tactics or glossy smiles. Kian had that lethal perfection—the kind of man who prowled boardrooms like a predator on scent. Black suit, paper-white shirt, eyes sharp enough to split steel.

His shadow stretched across the floor, confident and unshakable. For a moment, her heart tightened—maybe from fear, maybe a distant flicker of something she dared not name.

“I assume you understand the gravity of your situation?” Kian’s voice was smooth, but every syllable sliced like a scalpel.

Elara swallowed hard. “I do.”

A faint smirk lifted the corner of Kian’s mouth. “Good. Because relief doesn’t come cheap, and I have a proposal that might just save you.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I’m listening.”

He stepped closer, the city’s night light catching the hard planes of his face. “A contract marriage.”

The words dropped between them, cold as ice slipping down her spine.

Elara’s breath hitched. Every fairy tale she'd ever scoffed at crashed down in sharp shards around her. Marry him? A man whose name whispered in boardroom rumours, whose empire had grown by swallowing his rivals whole?

“Explain.” She forced her voice steady, drowning the shock.

Kian reached into his jacket pocket and slid a sleek leather folder across the table toward her.

Inside were legal clauses, detailed terms, and a single line underlined in stark red: Duration—one year. Full rights and responsibilities as husband and wife.

“You keep your company afloat,” he continued, eyes never blinking away, “and I gain control of Winters & Co.—not permanently, but powerful enough to settle old debts and… personal scores.”

Her pulse hit a frantic rhythm. She wanted to scream, refuse, run. But months of cold nights pacing empty offices and mounting bills pressed down like a vice.

“And if I refuse?” she asked, voice tight.

Kian’s gaze sharpened. “Then your company files for bankruptcy, your family’s name is buried beneath the press, and I get nothing.”

The board shifted uncomfortably, but none dared intervene.

Her jaw clenched, mind scrambling for a way out.

“Why me?” she demanded, eyes blazing. “Why the marriage?”

“Reputation,” Kian said simply. “Trust. A public alliance that buys me time and legitimacy to rebuild what was taken from my family. And you?”

She swallowed. “You don’t know what you’re asking.”

“No,” he said, voice dropping a fraction, “but I know what I’m willing to risk.”

The room’s heavy silence thickened.

Her thoughts twirled — a marriage of convenience or a calculated trap? Between a woman clinging to ruined legacies and a man wielding vendettas like weapons, the stakes had never been higher.

Her hand trembled over the contract, the ink promising salvation or destruction.

She glanced up. Kian’s cold eyes locked on hers—waiting.

Before she could breathe, the clock in the hallway tolled midnight.

Every second stretched taut.

Elara’s voice was barely a whisper: “I need time.”

Kian’s smirk deepened. “Twenty-four hours.”

As he turned away, the city lights flickered like a heartbeat hanging on the edge of a knife.

The contract lay open, a dark promise in her trembling hands.

Did salvation taste like ash?

Or was this the moment everything shattered?
