Capítulo 1
The glass walls of the Harper Tower boardroom caught the harsh city light like shards of ice—cold, sharp, unforgiving.
Celeste Harper sat rigid in her black leather chair, fingers curled around a stemless glass of water she barely tasted. The faint hum of the air conditioner mingled with the low murmur of shareholders exchanging whispered bets. The vast skyline behind them glittered with a thousand relentless ambitions, none more biting than the one trapped inside the room.
She didn’t blink as the double doors swung open. Steel-toed heels clicked a measured rhythm on polished marble. Dominic Lowell entered, his tailored navy suit drawn tight over lean shoulders, eyes glinting with the easy cruelty of a man who’d killed lions only to find out they weren’t the true beasts.
A hush rippled through the room.
Celeste’s gaze locked onto him even before the chatter died. Heat flared low in her chest—less anger, more a flare of caution dug deep into her bones. Dominic had a reputation: a predator masquerading as a corporate king. And today, he was here for blood.
“Good morning, everyone,” Dominic said, voice smooth as silk but sharp as a scalpel. He scanned the room, stopping on Celeste with a frozen smile that didn’t reach his storm-blue eyes.
Celeste forced a polite nod. “Dominic.”
His eyes flicked sideways. “Celeste. Or should I say… the last hope for a sinking ship.”
The words slid over the polished table between them like ice shards.
The chairman tapped his gavel, demanding silence. “Let’s begin. We have a full agenda.”
Celeste gritted her teeth and rose. “Before we dive in, I want to address the persistent rumors about the Harper Group’s stability.”
A few shareholders leaned forward, eyes sharp with greed or fear.
Celeste’s voice was steady but carried the weight of sleepless nights, of debts hidden behind forced smiles. “Despite recent struggles, our subsidiary expansions have shown promising growth. We have new partners lined up—”
Dominic cut in, voice dripping with condescension. “Partners?” He smirked, folding his arms. “Let me remind everyone here that the Harper name is a sinking vessel. And no amount of lipstick will hide the cracks.”
Celeste’s eyes narrowed but she held her ground. “I’m here to protect what generations built, not to watch it fall to opportunists.”
Dominic leaned forward, his gaze a blade. “Then you should prepare to step aside. Because I’m here to reclaim what your family destroyed.”
Murmurs erupted around the room. Celeste’s pulse pounded in her ears. The cold sweat slicking her palms burned with rising adrenaline.
The chairman raised a hand again. “Order. Dominic, we agreed to discuss the quarterly report first.”
He sat back, but his smile was a ghost lurking under calm waters.
Celeste slid her phone from her purse, fingers trembling slightly as she tapped the projected financials onto the screen. Numbers—a language she was trying to translate into survival.
“Here,” she said, voice calm but brittle. “Even with setbacks, our diversification strategy has increased net assets by six percent.”
Dominic snorted. “Numbers don’t tell the full story, Miss Harper. For example…” He stood abruptly, palm hitting the table in a deliberate slap that silenced the room. “I intend to propose a motion—a takeover bid—for complete control of the Harper Group.”
Gasps echoed through the chamber like falling glass.
Celeste’s breath caught. The room’s temperature plummeted.
“Control?” Her voice cracked like ice underfoot. “That’s—”
“A necessary measure,” Dominic interrupted smoothly. “To save a legacy your family has mismanaged.”
He swept a look over the shareholders, eyes gleaming. “I have the funds, the backing, and the vision to resurrect this empire. It’s time for Harper to be Lowell’s again.”
Whispers spiraled into heated debate.
Celeste’s mind raced, heart hammering a desperate tempo.
Her family's name, their future—on the chopping block.
She rose, voice sharper than steel. “I won’t let you dismantle everything we’ve fought to keep alive.”
Dominic stepped closer, eyes blazing. “Then prepare for a battle, Celeste. Because this war has only just begun.”
The room’s energy surged—a silent storm waiting to break.
Outside, the skyline dimmed as clouds swallowed the sun, shadows creeping over glass and steel.
And somewhere in the depths of the boardroom, a war was ignited. One where ice would burn—and hate might just flicker into something dangerously close to fire.
The doors swung shut behind Dominic, leaving everyone suspended on the razor’s edge of what would come next.
