Desperate Deals

The city outside Lila’s studio apartment was a riot of neon and noise, the cacophony pressing against the thin glass like a cage. She sat hunched over the smudged canvas, her fingers streaked with oil paint, but her brush hovered uselessly. The bold streaks of cobalt blue and burnt sienna blurred in her vision, drowned by the weight tightening her chest.

“Miss Morgan?” The sharp tap-tap of heels on hardwood echoed from the hallway beyond the cracked-open door. Lila’s heart jolted as the door creaked wider, revealing her mother’s pale face. Her eyes were red-rimmed—again.

“It’s worse this time,” Mrs. Morgan’s voice was brittle, chopping through the heavy air like shattered glass.

Lila wiped her hands on a ragged cloth, every muscle taut. “What happened?”

Mrs. Morgan stepped in, clutching a stack of papers like lifelines. “The bank’s giving us a final notice. The debts on the estate have ballooned beyond what we can cover. They’re moving to seize the property by next week.”

A low, bitter laugh escaped Lila—half disbelief, half hysteria. “The estate? Everything... gone?”

Her mother’s lip trembled. “Unless we come up with thirty million by Friday.”

The words hung between them like a death sentence. Thirty million. A sum so colossal it made Lila’s pulse drum in her ears.

She turned back toward her canvas, but the colors mocked her. Her art—with all its passion and protest—couldn’t touch that kind of money. Not even close.

“How did it get this bad?” Lila whispered. “I thought the investments would hold.”

Mrs. Morgan sank onto the worn couch, the leather creaking under her. “Bad decisions, reckless spending... And Cassian’s disappearance didn’t help. We’ve been bleeding money trying to keep things afloat without him.”

Lila’s throat tightened at the mention of her younger brother’s name. Cassian—her stubborn, reckless brother—lost to the world, spiraling somewhere she refused to trace.

“I promised myself I’d fix this,” she murmured, voice cracking. “I won’t let everything fall apart.”

Her mother’s stare softened. “You’re doing your best, Lila. But it’s not enough. We need a miracle.”

The room contracted around them, gray and suffocating. Outside, the city pulsed on like an uncaring heart, indifferent to the family crisis unfolding in this cramped studio.

Lila shoved to her feet, jaw clenched so tight it ached. She needed a plan. Something—anything—that didn’t involve selling her soul or turning to the vultures circling their downfall.

A sudden vibration shattered the silence—her phone buzzing insistently against the cluttered table. She snatched it up; the screen displayed an unknown number. Without thinking, she swiped to answer.

“Miss Morgan,” a velvet voice purred, smooth and dangerous, filling the room with a chilling warmth.

Lila stiffened. “Who is this?”

“Let’s just say a benefactor,” the voice teased. “I hear you’re in quite a predicament.”

A shiver traced her spine. There was something unsettling about the calm authority in that tone. Power distilled into words.

“What do you want?” Lila tried to keep her voice steady.

“Merely to offer a solution. You need thirty million by Friday.” A pause, deliberate and heavy. “I have a proposition. Marry Caspian Drake.”

Her breath caught—the name slicing through her like a blade.

“Marry him?” The disbelief was palpable. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Oh, but I do,” the man—or woman?—insisted smoothly. “Caspian’s empire is solid, untouchable. He’s cold, ruthless, but fair. A marriage contract could save your family from collapse.”

Lila’s fingers trembled, the word ‘marriage’ scorching the air between them.

“Why would he help us?”

The voice lowered, a velvet threat masked as a promise. “Because there are pieces moving behind the scenes—alliances shifting like shadows. And he needs a wife with something to lose.”

Her mind spun—marrying a billionaire Cold Titan wasn’t a dream; it was a plunge into unknown darkness.

“Think about it,” the voice whispered, then cut off.

The line went dead.

Her pulse hammered like a furious drum. Lila stared at the silent phone, the offer burning itself onto her soul.

Desperation gnawed at her resolve. Was it madness or salvation? Marry Caspian Drake. A marriage born not of love, but of survival. A deal made at the edge of ruin.

Outside, the city’s restless heartbeat thrummed beneath the window, indifferent and endless.

Lila closed her eyes, the cold whisper of that name echoing through the tight confines of her studio.

Drake.

Whatever hell awaited, the game had begun.
