Awakening in Shadows

Darkness held her like a suffocating shroud. Amara’s eyelids fluttered, catching the barest thread of a flickering neon glow slipping from cracks in broken warehouse windows. The acrid sting of rust and damp concrete wormed its way into her nostrils. Mouth dry, she swallowed and tasted something metallic—and fear.

The cold bit through the threadbare fabric of her sleeves. She tried to move, but her arms felt heavy, leaden, disconnected from any command she could remember. A slow, grinding sensation gnawed at the edges of her mind. A whisper of pain, like shattered glass scraping inside her skull.

She blinked again, and the blur of graffitied walls sharpened into focus. Vast emptiness stretched all around—an abandoned skeleton of a building, with beams sagging under time’s weight. Somewhere far off, the distant hum of the city’s restless neon pulse hummed, vibrating through cracked walls like a heartbeat she couldn’t claim.

Her gaze dropped to her left forearm. There—a tattoo. Sharp, black ink that seemed carved beneath the skin rather than drawn. A jagged symbol, twisting like a fractured shard of glass. It was unfamiliar, foreign, yet unbearably significant. The edges of the ink blurred under her trembling fingers.

Who am I?

The question clawed through the haze of forgotten memories, each one slipping like smoke through her grasp.

Her breath hitched—a ragged rasp stifled by the thick stillness. The stench of oil and mildew crawled up her nostrils, mingling with the faint taste of copper on her tongue. Sweat prickled along her back despite the chill, her heartbeat hammering discordantly against brittle ribs.

She tried to push herself up, but her muscles betrayed her. The rough wooden floor bit into her elbows as the warehouse seemed to swallow her whole in its oppressive silence.

A patch of moonlight spilled—silver and cold—across the cracked cement. It revealed shattered glass shining like teeth beneath the boots of forgotten shadows.

Then, a distant creak—metal on concrete. A breath, heavy and slow.

Her eyes snapped to the cracked doorway.

Footsteps.

They weren’t far.

Closer.

The darkness shifted, and the air tightened around her throat. Panic ignited in her chest, raw and vivid, searing through the fog of amnesia.

Her heartbeat quickened—once, twice—an animal sensing a hunt was underway.

She scrambled backward, the rough floor gouging her palms, her breathing shallow, sharp.

Another step.

A voice cracked the silence, low, gravelly, soaked with menace.

“Amara.”

No.

Her heart slammed against the cage of ribs—how does he know my name?

Frozen, drenched in cold sweat, she glanced down once more at the tattoo, her only tether to a past erased.

What have I done?

Footsteps stopped.

The shadow beyond the doorway condensed, drawn like a predator closing in on prey.

Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging into bleeding skin.

The warehouse swallowed the night—the fragments of a forgotten sin waiting to emerge from the shadows.

And then—

The silence shattered.

Someone was coming for her.
