Kapitel 1
The night sky burned with the scorched streaks of broken stars falling past the domed viewport, each one a silver slash against the cold black. Kaelen Voss sat hunched over the glow of a cracked holo-map, the dim pulse of neon lights flickering in the cramped shadows around him. His fingers traced the tangled routes of supply chains and patrol shifts within the Dominion’s outer sectors—a star chart turned battleground.
In the suffocating silence of the cavernous hold, a sharp metallic clang echoed behind him—a dropped wrench, careless but enough to wrench Kaelen’s tense muscles taut. He didn’t turn. Not yet.
The air tasted faintly of burnt circuitry and recycled coolant. Sharp, antiseptic. His breath came shallow, each exhale a mist before the frigid vent shoved it away. His eyes, rimmed with fatigue and soot from the last skirmish, flicked over the lines of data splitting apart like fractured ice.
"What’s the word from the front?" came a voice low and rough from the shadows.
Kaelen’s jaw clenched, scarring the angry line beneath his cheekbone. “Looks worse. The Dominion’s tightening control—rationing fuel on the fringe worlds, rerouting shipments. But something’s off." He tapped a blinking red anomaly on the hologram. "This convoy was supposed to dock three days ago on Turak IV. No confirmation, no distress calls. Radio silence.”
Another breath. The air thickened with the distant hum of starcruisers patrolling overhead, an endless, oppressive symphony.
“Turak IV... That’s deep in the outer rim, a forgotten speck,” the voice said, cautious. A rat—Kaelen knew that tone well—always smelling for advantage. "Maybe they lost contact to pirates."
Kaelen’s eyes snapped up, sharp and dangerous. “Pirates don’t jam every channel. And the Dominion’s fleet’s supposed to be airtight. Something’s crawling beneath the surface.” He leaned forward, urgency lacing steel into his voice. “This isn’t random. It’s deliberate.”
From the dark, a silhouette emerged—Lira Myr, his second-in-command—her expression carved from stone, eyes burning emerald with suspicion. Her stance was poised, a butterfly’s grace twisted with razor precision.
“Empire’s playing a deeper game," she said, voice tight. "Whispers from the core say the Empress's advisors seek to bury more than just lost convoys. There’s talk of projects folded under layers of secrecy—projects no one sane would mention aloud.”
“Traitors covet shadows." Kaelen’s fingers curled into fists. The scars along his knuckles gleamed faintly in the holo light. “I’ll find out what they’re hiding. Whatever it costs.”
A static snap on the comm panel broke the moment.
“Kaelen Voss, report to the council chamber immediately,” the brittle voice crackled formal and cold. The dispatch was all too familiar—the summons no rebel wanted.
“Council’s a trap,” Lira warned, narrowing her eyes.
Kaelen’s back straightened, starship pilot reflexes sharpening the edges of his defiance. “Then we fly right into the storm.”
Two guards escorted him from the dim hold into a corridor lit by fluorescent lamps that buzzed in relentless rhythm. The passage smelled of oil and damp metal. Walls gleamed with Dominion insignias—the crowned serpent, endless coils of power suffocating even simple spaces.
Inside the council chamber, the grand hall was a cavern of polished obsidian and cruel whispers. Smooth marble columns rose to meet a ceiling veined with gold circuitry, pulsing faintly—an uneasy heartbeat of imperial might.
At the far end, a dais held Empress Ismara Valen, her silhouette carved sharp as a diamond in the dim light. Cloaked in regal vestments that shimmered with dark stars, she radiated a chill deeper than vacuum, a predator’s poise.
Around her, a ring of advisors muttered beneath the weight of carved bone masks—the Dominion’s hand pressing down like a glacial fist.
Kaelen’s boots echoed sharply across the floor as he approached the center. The room prickled with silent judgment, the air taut as drawn wires.
Empress Ismara’s gaze locked on him—a storm of frozen fire. “Kaelen Voss,” she breathed, silk laced with venom, “you stand accused of sedition, conspiracy against the Empire, and inciting rebellion in the outer sectors.”
Breath caught. The room shifted, oppressive and charged.
Kaelen’s pulse hammered in his ears. Every hidden camera, every whispering listener, every shadow became a weapon pointed straight at him.
“False.” His voice cracked but held, flame beneath ice. “I seek only truth.”
Her smile was a razor through silk. “Then your truth will be your sentence, traitor. The Dominion does not tolerate those who fall from its grace.”
The guards moved in a silent tide, encircling him like predators closing the noose.
The verdict was not whispered—it was screamed.
The heavy doors slammed shut, sealing Kaelen’s fate beneath a galaxy burning with secrets.
And the embers of the fallen star began to ignite.
---
A knock erupted sharp and urgent on the rusted hatch behind him as Kaelen sat hunched over the flickering holo-map in the dim hold.
He paused, breath snagging in his throat.
The cold air felt suddenly heavier.
The war was just beginning.
